Evolution of resource generalism via generalized stress response confers increased reproductive thermal tolerance in a pest beetle

چکیده
Abstract Generalism should be favoured evolutionarily when there is no genetic constraint or loss of fitness across alternative environments. However, evolution generalism can require substantial evolutionary change, which confer a general stress response to other aspects the environment. We created generalist lineages from an ancestral, resource-specialized laboratory population seed beetles (Callosobruchus maculatus) by rearing lines over 60 generations on mixture both ancestral and novel host species test for costs associated with involving changes in gene expression correlated phenotypic responses during shift generalism. Evolved had higher resource, indicating that they overcame initial trade-offs. This involved upregulation major (heat shock protein) genes coding metabolic enzymes, suggesting underpinning physiological cost. Resource populations also evolved greater thermal tolerance breadth, highlighting resource might pre-adapt respond favourably environmental stressors, following selection generalized upregulation. The rapid gain hosts pest invasion resilience ongoing climate change.

Altruism and the evolution of resource generalism and specialism
The evolution of resource specialism and generalism has attracted widespread interest. Evolutionary drivers affecting niche differentiation and resource specialization have focused on the role of trade-offs. Here, however, we explore how the role of cooperation, mediated through altruistic behaviors, and classic resource-consumer dynamics can influence the evolution of resource utilization. Usi...
متن کاملOver-expression of the water and salt stress-regulated Asr1 gene confers an increased salt tolerance
ASR1 is a plant-specific, highly charged, low molecular weight polypeptide. Purified ASR1 was shown to posses sequence specific Zn 2+ -dependent DNA binding activity (Kalifa et al . Biochemical Journal 381, 373–378, 2004). Steady-state levels of tomato Asr1 mRNA and protein are transiently increased following exposure of plants to polyethylene glycol, NaCl or abscisic acid. The biological role ...

Heat shock proteins are associated with protection against various abiotic stresses. Here, the isolation of a chrysanthemum cDNA belonging to the HSP70 family is reported. The cDNA, designated CgHSP70, encodes a 647-residue polypeptide, of estimated molecular mass 70.90 kDa and pI 5.12. A sub-cellular localization assay indicated that the cDNA product is deposited in the cytoplasm and nucleus. ...
